An unsightly area on the eastern side of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge may eventually be turned into a waterfront park under a proposal by a group of state and local agencies.

Caltrans, Oakland, the Bay Area Toll Authority and six other agencies are proposing converting up to 50 acres of what is now an industrial section occupied by utility equipment and pump stations, into what one official describes as a “world-class park.”

One concept for the proposed park would focus on restoring and protecting the area, while a second proposal would develop hiking and bicycle trails.

A third concept for the park would include an area for concerts, a tramway and a Ferris wheel.

Nine agencies are pitching in $950,000 to begin a study on details of the proposed park. A report is due this summer.
